{a year into reading like rory}

The first year came and went and we added a decent number of books to our ‘have read’ list.

Nineteen more books crossed off!

I think my favorite from the first year was Catch-22. That may have something to do with the fact that it’s the book I traveled with on my trip to Spain, so thinking of it makes me think of Barcelona.

It is probably the one I reference the most.

I did really enjoy most of the books we read.  My least favorite was probably Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility.  This was surprising to me, as I had remembered enjoying Pride & Prejudice in High School.  I feel like this one was so similar to Pride & Prejudice that it was almost like it was the same plot, just new characters to go through the heartache of young adulthood. There are a few more of Austen’s on the list so maybe my feelings will change.

My favorite part about all of this was getting to have Skype dates with one of my bestest friends to discuss the books with each other!  There is something super enjoyable about reading books with a friend and chatting about them afterward.  Sharing your likes, your dislikes, your favorite parts, your surprise at an unexpected turn of events.  It’s always more interesting to have another vantage point into the wold between a book’s covers.

There is a quote that, I feel, sums up why book clubs are such a good idea:

a-year-into-reading-like-rory-no-two-persons

This is so accurate!  When one reads a book they create in their mind an image of the places, the characters, the actions.  This movie created in one’s mind is never exactly the same between two people.  They will be similar, of course, after all you are all reading the same descriptions written by the author; but every reader adds their own nuances.

This being the case, it is interesting to exchange one’s views of any particular book.  Especially when exchanging with a friend!

All in all, it was a year full of some really great books!  And we even managed to have a book date or two in person!  No easy feat considering there was roughly 4,000 miles between us at any given time.

Do you have a friend that you would want to create a book club with?!

What book would you read first?!
