As you may or may not know,
basically depending on whether or not you read my ‘about me’ page I am a military wife, and with the military comes – deployments.
In this house, we refer to them as “work trips”.
I know I had a reason for this when it first came up with Little Miss; but I’m blanking. Probably something to do with her oversharing with the world and me not needing the whole world to know daddy is deployed.
I guess I’m changing that up now… Oooops!
Most importantly, the alliteration of Work Trip Wednesdays makes my heart happy, so that’s what we’re sticking with.
Our little family finds ourselves in one of these Work Trips. As the kids are six, three, and one I decided to come up with a way to help them cope. A countdown. But not just any countdown! The bookwormiest* countdown one ever did see!
I have seen a lot of different ways to countdown a deployment
or anything really – paper chains, calendars, “kisses” goodnight, chalkboards. However, none of these sounded all that amazing to me, nor did they sound all that fun for the kids.
So, I came up with my own idea!
And of course that idea had to involve books. Because…duh.
I counted the weeks and gathered one book per week daddy will be on his Work Trip. I wrapped each book up with plain white paper and stacked them up somewhere the kids could easily seem them; but not easily get at them. Because kids are
devious little miscreants awesome!
Every Wednesday the four of us will sit down together, open up one of the books, and read it. Some weeks will include activities that match the theme of that week’s book and all activities or crafts will be things we can send on to daddy.
I am hoping the visual of the dwindling pile of books will help the kids process the concept of time and get a better feel for when daddy will be home again. And I plan on bringing you guys along for the ride!
So stay tuned, every week, for Work Trip Wednesdays!
Have you been through a deployment? What kind of countdown have you used?
