Merry Christmas everyone!
It being Christmas means that it is the first day of Christmas today! The first of twelve!
So, without further ado, let’s do this.
On the first day of Christmas my bookshelf gave to me
one big Holy Shit! moment!
For the first day of Christmas I read…
Astropphysics for People in a Hurry by Neil DeGrasse Tyson*.
I can honestly say that this was a super hard listen. Maybe if I had had a hard copy of the book in front of me I would have been able to make more sense off all the things he covered and discussed throughout. Although, it probably would have taken me days and days and
years days to read.
Within this book Tyson aims to answer all the big questions one may have about the universe; but in a way that makes it easy for today’s busy person to fit in to their schedule. He covers big topics in this little book; such as black holes, the Big Bang, the search for new planets and disowning poor Pluto, and quantum mechanics.
Not going to lie, I have one main take away form the book and it isn’t even about astrophysics per say…
I know, I know…I’m terrible.
Although! In my defense, I never said I was a big science buff or anything, I was attempting to read a variety of genres for this twelve days of Christmas.
My one take away was that at one point in the book Tyson has a ‘Holy shit!’ moment. I don’t even remember what he was discussing when he had this moment because I’m a terrible book worm. My bad. While he was learning about something to do with astrophysics he wrote about a moment where he went “Holy shit!” and it made me chuckle. Not because I think science is funny; but because it reminded me of a joke we have in our family.
When my older brother went off to college (the first of five to go) we made a big family road trip out of it. On the way to ASU we went to see the Grand Canyon, for the first time for all seven of us, if I’m remembering correctly. Well, as my brother was driving, and as my acrophobic Dad had a kung fu grip on the ‘oh shit’ handle, we pulled up along the Grand Canyon. Upon seeing this on ground level for the first time our Mom exclaimed ‘Holy shit!’ very loudly from the back of our minivan. None of us could believe our ears! Swearing was not something we had heard from our Mom’s mouth like ever and we were all fourteen years old and younger, so basically we all burst out laughing and it became a thing with us.
So, that’s why I remembered that one part of the very scientific read…
Sorry Tyson, I wish I could have retained more of the information. I did like the style of his writing though and the way he talks about all of this super scientific stuff while still using every days words is great!
Stay tuned for what my book shelf will bring me tomorrow!
